Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid Serum: The Ultimate Hydration

Hey y’all! If you are all in to skin care like I am, you know that one of the major fads in skin care right now is hyaluronic acid. How many of you know why this is so popular?

What does it do?

So hyaluronic acid is naturally produced and present in the body–mostly in the eyes, skin, and joints. Its main purpose is to provide hydration to the skin and lubrication to the joints.

Hyaluronic acid binds to water in an effort to retain moisture and can hold 1000x its weight in water. You might see it listed in ingredients as HA or sodium hyaluronate.

Naturally, hyaluronic acid is what keeps the moisture in your skin. Using a serum is effective in that it holds more moisture in your skin, creating a more youthful look.

Why should you use it?

If you’ve seen any of my videos on skin care, you know what the most important part of skin care is… MOISTURIZING. This is why you want this ingredient in your products: it is the ultimate moisturizer.

As the body endures the natural aging process, the amount of hyaluronic acid naturally produced decreases. Adding it topically can supplement the lack of production.

Also, it is thought to reduce the signs of aging because it has proven to help skin recover from sun damage and decrease the appearance of wrinkles. Basically, it counteracts early signs of aging.

What products should I look for?

There is already anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties in hyaluronic acid, so there isn’t much risk of irritation or sensitivity to the skin when searching for the right products. Also, it is naturally produced in the body so there is even lower risk of adverse reaction!

I suppose it would be better to tell you what products to stay away from when it comes to hyaluronic acid:

  • Products with artificial fragrance (irritant)
  • Products containing parabens or phthalates
  • Products without disclosed ingredients list
  • Overpriced products–you can find effective products that are cost effective!

How it works:

As this is part of the skincare series, let’s get back to the benefits of the use on the skin! Hyaluronic acid binds to water in the skin to help maintain hydration. It helps your body maintain the ultimate hydration.

Hydrating the skin counteracts the early signs of aging by repairing damage to the skin, creating a more supple look, and decreasing the appearance of fine wrinkles.

More than that, it’s stimulation to increase blood cells helps the healing of a wound. Certain breakouts are, also, wounds. The antibacterial compound of hyaluronic acid helps in this area as it stimulates the healing process. That being said, hyaluronic acid is beneficial to certain breakouts!

Order of Use

You will use this topically as the last product before you use your moisturizer.

Other Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid

Topical products with hyaluronic acid will reduce redness, the look of fine wrinkles, and soothe dermatitis.

Many studies have been done on the effects of injections. I am not one to get injections, but there is more than just one benefit to the injections.

  • Skin: To get firmer looking skin, injections can be administered directly to the an area to create the appearance of younger looking skin.
  • Joints: Hyaluronic acid injections are used directly to alleviate the effects of osteoarthritis/severe joint pain.
  • Wounds: It has been proven to increase the amount of blood cells to help wounds heal when applied to oral wounds.

Most people who experience extreme joint pain use an oral supplement to extend the benefits of the injection. Taking a supplement increases the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin–which will continue to help the hydration of the skin–and could be the most beneficial way to intake this ingredient.

Since hyaluronic acid is the ultimate hydration, it is found in eye drops to counteract dry eyes. Not only that, but hyaluronic acid has been shown to preserve bone strength and counteract symptoms of acid reflux when taken in a supplement form.

P.S. Since this is newer in the beauty fad world (6 years or so) there is so much to learn about this ingredient! This is just a reminder that, although things move faster now, we are always continuously learning more. That is why todays beauty trends are not the same as the beauty trends from decades ago! Keep learning more!

  1. I have not used this specific brand, however I was told years ago to use a alpha hydroxy acid to remove the dead cell from skin by a esthetician. Which I think as long as you are use some form to do that it will pay off over the years, along with sunscreen to protect damage.
